Shona
Sculptures find a new home!
Shona Sculptures from Zimbabwe
from the collection of Mr. Hans
D. Heubert are now on display in our
new gallery room 205
Over 30 sculptures on display. Take
the journey and explore these unique
sculptures and learn more about
their makers.
Shona sculptures are the creation of
a relatively young movement of
African artists in Zimbabwe. Carved
entirely by hand, they show a
superior technique and a language of
their own. The serpentine and
springstone rocks that they are made
from begin talking to their
sculptors before chisel and hammer
is set to them thus, the artists
only free the creations that the
stones want to become; revealing a
world of very rich imagery which is
sometimes natural, sometimes
mythological, but always
astonishing.
